A wider part, a smaller ponytail, more hair in the shower drain than last year. Thinning hair is common, it is stressful, and it has turned into one of the busiest corners of the online supplement and scalp-care market.
Green Elixir is an independent research site. We read the official sales pages of hair growth products that are sold online, write down what the manufacturers actually state in text (ingredients, prices, guarantees, shipping), and set those statements next to what public health sources say about the ingredients. We do not test products, we do not publish testimonials and we do not hand out star ratings. The goal is simple: help you see what you are buying before you spend money.
Is my hair loss normal shedding or real thinning?
Losing some hair every day is normal. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains that people typically shed about 50 to 100 hairs a day, because each follicle cycles through growth, rest and release. Shedding becomes a concern when it is clearly more than your usual amount, or when you notice a widening part, a receding hairline, patches or a see-through crown.
Two signs suggest you should see a doctor before buying anything:
- Sudden, patchy or rapid loss. MedlinePlus lists causes such as alopecia areata, thyroid disease, medicines, infections and nutritional problems. These need a diagnosis, not a bottle.
- Redness, scaling, pain or itching on the scalp. Some forms of hair loss leave scarring, and early care matters.
Our guide on why hair starts thinning walks through the most common causes in plain language.
What causes most thinning hair?
The most common cause in both men and women is hereditary pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). In women it usually shows up as a widening part and less volume on top; MedlinePlus describes female pattern baldness as thinning over the crown that rarely leads to total baldness. Other frequent causes are telogen effluvium (a burst of shedding a few months after illness, surgery, childbirth or major stress), low iron, thyroid problems and tight hairstyles.
This matters for product choice. A scalp oil or a capsule is not going to change a thyroid problem or iron deficiency, and only a few approaches have solid evidence for pattern hair loss. Read our overview of hair loss treatment options for the full picture.
Hair growth products compared
The table below lists the products we looked at. Everything in it comes from the text of each official website as we found it on our last review. Where a detail was not shown in text (for example, prices displayed only as images), we left it out rather than guess.
| Product | Form | Key ingredients (per the official website) | Price per bottle (official site) | Money-back guarantee | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FoliPrime | Liquid applied to the scalp, twice a day | Argan, babassu and castor (ricinus) oils, turmeric oil, essential oils (ylang ylang, capsicum, frankincense, myrrh, lemon), vanilla extract, keratin, biotin, hyaluronic acid | Not shown in text; check the official website | 60 days (stated on the text sales page) | Women who prefer a topical scalp routine and accept essential oils |
| HairVigor Vitality | Capsules | Aloe barbadensis leaf extract, argan (Argania spinosa) extract, tocopheryl acetate (a form of vitamin E) | $59 (1 bottle), $49 each in a 3-pack ($147), $39 each in a 6-pack ($234) | Stated inconsistently (30, 60 and 180 days in different places); confirm at checkout | People who want a simple capsule and are fine with a short, undosed ingredient list |
| BioGrow Advanced Hair Regrowth | Details not disclosed in text we could access | Could not be verified | Could not be verified | Could not be verified | We could not verify enough facts to review it |
A note on BioGrow Advanced Hair Regrowth: its official website could not be accessed by our research process, and we do not rely on third-party "review" pages, so we have not written a page about it or linked to it. We will add facts only when they can be confirmed from the official source.

How do I choose a hair growth product?
A few questions narrow things down quickly:
- Topical or oral? Scalp products act where the hair grows and avoid swallowing anything, but some ingredients (essential oils, capsicum) can irritate skin. Capsules are easier to use daily, but swallowing an ingredient is a different safety question. Our hair oil vs. hair supplement comparison covers this in detail.
- Is the full ingredient list shown in text, with amounts? FoliPrime lists its ingredients but describes them as a proprietary blend. HairVigor Vitality lists three ingredients without amounts. Neither publishes doses, which makes it hard to compare against research.
- Is the price clear before checkout? HairVigor Vitality shows its prices in text. FoliPrime's text page leaves the price fields blank, so the price appears only on the order page.
- Is the guarantee consistent? If a sales page states different refund windows in different places, rely on the refund policy page and the terms shown at checkout, and keep your order confirmation.
- Have you ruled out a medical cause? Iron, thyroid and hormone checks are cheap compared with months of product purchases.
What does the evidence say about hair growth ingredients?
Here is the honest summary. The treatment with the strongest evidence for pattern hair loss is topical minoxidil, which MedlinePlus says must be used for at least four months, and possibly up to a year, before an effect shows (MedlinePlus: minoxidil topical). For men, prescription finasteride is another option.
Popular supplement and scalp-oil ingredients sit on much weaker ground:
- Biotin helps only when someone is actually deficient, which the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements describes as rare. The ODS biotin fact sheet also notes that high biotin intake can interfere with some lab tests.
- Iron, zinc and vitamin D are linked with hair loss when levels are low, so testing is more useful than guessing. Our vitamins for hair loss guide explains which nutrients matter.
- Plant oils such as argan and castor condition the hair shaft, but good clinical evidence that they regrow hair is lacking. Rosemary oil has one small randomized trial behind it. See natural oils for hair growth.
None of the products on this site has published an independent clinical trial of its own formula, as far as their official pages show.
Women and thinning hair
Many hair products sold online, including FoliPrime, are aimed at women. Female hair thinning often has more than one cause at once: pattern loss plus low iron, or postpartum shedding plus thyroid change. Our guide to hair thinning in women covers the common patterns and what a dermatologist will check.
Does hard water cause hair loss?
Some sales pages blame tap water minerals for thinning hair. Hard water can leave mineral deposits that make hair feel rough and look dull, but we found no good evidence that it causes pattern hair loss. Our hard water and hair loss page goes through what the studies actually measured.

Frequently asked questions
How many hairs a day is normal to lose?
The American Academy of Dermatology says shedding about 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. A clear increase, patches or a widening part is worth checking with a doctor.
Can a supplement regrow hair?
No supplement is approved to regrow hair. Nutrients such as iron, zinc and biotin matter mainly when someone is deficient. Topical minoxidil is the approved over-the-counter option for hereditary hair loss.
Which product on this site is topical and which is a capsule?
FoliPrime is a liquid massaged into the scalp, according to its official website. HairVigor Vitality is sold as capsules.
Why is BioGrow Advanced Hair Regrowth not reviewed?
We could not access its official website text to verify ingredients, price or guarantee, and we do not copy third-party review sites, so we left it out until facts can be confirmed.
